White, unspoilt beach views and the Atlantic’s waves crashing in the background set an intimate wedding atmosphere for two ocean loving souls. Morné, who affectionately refers to Vanessa as his “penguin” met her through mutual friends over sunset drinks.
Vanessa fondly remembers how his funny jokes left her in stitches from the get go. Their young and playful nature meant their days were filled with giggles and laughs. What was meant to be a two week job in Qatar, turned into a two month excursion for Morné and absence certainly made his heart grow fonder. It’s was during this time that he realized that she was the only girl for him.
It was on a drizzling spring morning that they delivered paperwork for their new car, when Morné suggested they go for breakfast and the Aquarium. It started pouring as they arrived, so they held hands running & laughing to the entrance.
Penguins have the same mates for their whole life, so asking for Vanessa’s hand in marriage at the penguin enclosure seemed like the perfect proposal plan. Only it was so crowded and bumping into friends meant he had to come up with another plan.
They then went for a walk along the pier and just as he reached into his pocket to take the ring out, Vanessa’s phone rang. It was her sister. Once she said goodbye, she turned around to find Morné on one knee with the ring box in his hand and he said “Vanessa Lamont, will you do me the honour of being my penguin and marry me”? Happy tears followed and in the end, it was the most magical moment and a perfect proposal.
Constructed on a low sand dune, The Oppiduine (on the dunes) venue at Grootvlei Guest Farm in Lamberstsbay is ideal for a relaxed and informal celebration. It has a unique shell clad exterior and its natural flooring of shells are collected from the surrounding beaches.

Tea or coffee anyone?
These two opted to celebrated their love for each other with close friends and family. After all, what’s a penguin without the colony?
Moments before the ceremony, and yes, it’s official. A good laugh is the best way to cure those nerves.
Of course, no wedding is complete without an Ellen/Oscar selfie.
The penguins nearly escaped back into the ocean (via the floor) but the couple managed to keep them together.
The love, comradery and all over feel good vibes, made this one of the most fun filled weddings ever.
