Leandri knew their relationship was something special when John made the kitchen staff at res bake his “1-year old cousin” a birthday cake for our their one year anniversary. When he proposed she couldn’t wait to say YES! And more than anything this exciting couple have an almost James Bond like beautiful proposal…

Leandri joined friends of mine to a costume party at Newlands with the theme “2nd Break at Newlands”. I organized the tickets so ‘coincidentally’ we ended up next to each other as I liked her. She had to take a lift back to Stellenbosch with us after the game and when her phone rung with the song of ‘To the left, to the left…’ a new house rule was instated! We were only allowed to turn left while trying to find our way back to Stellenbosch. We ended up in Wellington. I turned 21 at midnight and Leandri was the first to congratulate me with a kiss on the cheek…the rest is history. I asked her out 3-4 days later…
I knew it was something special when I realized after 2 years of dating that she has changed me for the better. Both as a person and also the fact that she keeps doing so, the more time I spend with her. She is just a very special person! When I went down on my knee to ask her I was filled with a joy that I’ve never experienced before. I knew she would say yes, but the way she reacted just can’t be described in words. More than anything we are truly Blessed with what we have in each other.

As a wide-eyed first year, finding your husband-to-be within the first couple of months, is definitely not at the top of your priority list. But if the opportunity presents itself, I’m sure no girl would say “pass”.
I met John in April 2007 and my heart sang in tune with the Oak tree leaves as a new season arrived. Our eyes met several times before the formal introduction followed but I was intrigued by this tall, tanned farm boy. We found it easy to keep the conversation flowing and I even got him talking through an entire rugby match at Newlands! I am still clueless as to how that match turned out or even which team played .. 😉
John sealed the deal under an oak tree. Fast forward six years and John planned a “date”. He arrived, an hour late, in the coolest old-school Porsche you’ve ever seen. Forgiven & forgotten for being late, he whisked me away to the winelands for lunch and a little wine-tasting – or so I thought. While I timeously sipped on my wine, John (normally a very slow eater), finished his meal in record time.
We drove around looking for a nice place to do a “tasting” when John stopped the car so that we could take some pictures of the beautiful surroundings. I fiddled with my phone and turned around to ask him to pose for my picture when he put his hand in his pocket and retrieved a note that I wrote him many years ago. He then went down on one knee (yup, I nearly went down on both of mine too!) and proposed with the most beautiful ring I could ever have imagined. Needless to say, I said/screemed/cried “YES” and it fitted perfectly.
We enjoyed a glass of champaigne on the bonnet of the Porche and savoured the moment before sharing the news. The final surprise was that he had arranged for our close friends to celebrate with us at Brennaissance Wine Estate. In my opinion – A Pretty perfect Day!
